"Many of the Gen-X/Slacker/Hacker hive respond to future shock as if it were a rickety rollercoaster, embracing the noradrenaline rush, or refusing to get on in the first place. This book gave me chills. Whether you are a cybergeek (Neal Stephenson thanks the penultimate journalist hipster Kevin Kelly at the back of Diamond Age. Reading them together provides a lovely temporal disorientation), wannabe SF writer, ecofascist, chaos engineer, or ontological anarchist -- his Big Picture will spark something worth having. The details may not matter, but this signpost is an important addition to any futurist's mental compost pile . . . "--Juris

"A combination of an anarchistic Annie, a twisted Oliver Twist, and a not-so-post-modern Dickensian nightmare, by far the best book I've read this year. My only fear is that it may become a classic that teachers force onto students who would be turned off, but hopefully the explicit sexual content will prevent this. Even with its predictable ending . . . I don't ever want to wake up!"--Andrew

Williams, Walter Jon. Metropolitan. $20.00.
"Since this review is entering the cyberspace byway, I want it to get to WJW: i.e., anybody in the New Mexico writers community, please pass this on, or point out our Web page. WJW has written some fine books. I promoted last year's Aristoi over Vinge's Hugo Award winner because I believed it contained some fairly radical metaphysics concealed within a great space opera plot. The same can be said for Metropolitan, which establishes a coherent alternate geomancy-based science, ruminates on the nature of power and society, and coats it all with a tense thriller plot. It's great. I loved it. But once again the minute the protagonist follows through with the accumulated potential and things are about to get truly interesting, the book ends. Normally I'm not in favor of sequels, but this book screams for one. The world is built, the characters are fleshed out, and the science is real groovy. WJW, finish it -- please."--Juris
